Rush Female Coaches Alliance Launches

Rush Soccer announced the formation of the Rush Female Coaches Alliance (RFCA), a group aimed at combatting the low participation rates of women as soccer coaches in the United States through mentorship and education.

The group is led by a Leadership Council, which will work in three specific areas to develop women coaches in Rush - Leadership, Mentoring, and Education.

Programming includes online and in-person coaching and leadership development resources, one-on-one mentorship relationships, and connection to coaching opportunities and information under the Rush umbrella.

“I’m really excited for the launch of this program; it is unique to Rush Soccer and we are hoping to mentor and educate the next generation of female leaders and coaches,” said Laila Modi, Technical Director at Phoenix Rush and member of the RFCA Leadership Council.

Participation rates by women as coaches are vastly different from the rates at which girls have participated as players since the early 1990s. Digging deeper, women are also limited in coaching both genders and participation rates decrease the higher the level of coaching gets. To illustrate, while 15% of 504 Rush teams surveyed by RFCA are coached by women, less then 10% of Technical Director roles in the United States are held by women.

“We have a unique opportunity to create real impacts in this area because of the structure of Rush,” said Lauren Meehan, member of the RFCA Leadership Council.

Meehan continued, “We are small enough that we can speak directly to each club and move them to be invested in being part of the solution yet big enough with our international footprint that we can make a real dent in the overall landscape for women in the game.”

Research shows that women in leadership roles correspond with a host of benefits, from better business outcomes, healthier workplace cultures, and empowering the next generation of leaders to know that they can make their mark, whether that happens in the coaching realm, the C-suite, or their local community.

The RFCA Leadership Council is:
